Hidden Message Word Search
Imagine a regular word search, but with a secret twist. After you find every word, look at the letters that are left over in the grid. Read them in order (left to right, top to bottom). They spell a hidden message.
How a player solves it
- Read the word list at the bottom of the page
- Find each word in the grid. Words can run left-to-right, top-to-bottom, diagonally, or backward
- Cross off each word from the list as you find it
- When you're done, the letters you didn't use spell a hidden phrase. Write it on the dotted line
How you build one
- Type a title, your word list, and your hidden message — or click Generate with AI and let AI write all three for you
- Pick a grid shape (rectangle, circle, heart, star, etc.)
- Click Generate. The app places the words and fills the leftover cells with your message
- Export when you're happy
Tip: This is the most popular variant. People love the "aha" moment when the hidden message appears.
Missing Vowels Word Search
This one has two puzzles in one. The word list looks broken — the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) are replaced with dots. The player has to figure out what each word is BEFORE they can hunt for it in the grid.
How a player solves it
- Read the title. It's the biggest clue — every word will fit that theme
- Look at the first item in the word list. Example:
C·S·R
- The dots are missing vowels. The consonants C, S, R are still in order
- Think of a word in the theme that fits.
C·S·R = CAESAR (Roman emperor)
- Write the full word on the empty boxes under the clue
- Once all words are decoded, hunt for the full words in the grid
- The leftover letters still spell a hidden message, just like the main variant
Important: The grid itself has full normal words. Only the word list shows the missing vowels. There's a full step-by-step tutorial with a real example puzzle — it pops up the first time you select this variant.
Every word in the grid is written backward. If the word is TEMPLE, the grid has E-L-P-M-E-T somewhere. The player has to mentally reverse each word as they search.
How a player solves it
- Look at the word list as normal — the words are spelled correctly there
- In the grid, every word runs in reverse. Read right-to-left for horizontal words. Bottom-up for vertical words. End-to-start for diagonals
- Cross off each word as you find it
- The leftover letters still spell a hidden message
Best for: Older kids and adults who already master classic word searches and want a fresh challenge.
The hardest variant. No word list at all. The page just tells the player how many words are hiding in the grid. They have to find them all using only the theme as a clue.
How a player solves it
- Read the title and instructions. They tell you the theme and how many words to find
- Look at the grid and start spotting recognizable words on the theme
- Circle each one you find
- Keep going until you've found the announced count
- If you peek at the answer key, the leftover letters reveal the hidden message
Be careful: This is brutally hard. Save it for advanced solvers, themed challenge books, or "expert level" pages in a mixed puzzle book.
The familiar version everyone knows from puzzle books. A grid full of letters, a list of words to find, no hidden message, no extra twists. Pure word hunting.
How a player solves it
- Read the word list at the bottom of the page
- Find each word in the grid (any direction: horizontal, vertical, diagonal, backward)
- Circle it
- Cross it off the list
- Repeat until every word is found
Best for: Kids learning to read, ESL practice, beginner puzzle books, casual play. The most accessible variant.
